 Notre Dame

A Quick AsideWhy I Left My Dream School

I was absolutely, consumingly infatuated with the idea of going to Notre Dame from the time I was 14. Then I got there. I'm in the (overwhelming) minority of people who had a bad experience at the university, which boasts a 98% student retention rate, so I'll be brief: I found the student body disappointingly homogenous, most of my classes undeserving of the school's elite status, and student resources for mental health issues lacking. Near the end of my year there, after finalizing plans to transfer, I was sexually assaulted. To this day, I have nightmares in which I'm stuck on campus. Clearly, my time there remains an open wound. That said, I know the best way to heal is to talk about my experience with those open to hearing about it.

Despite all of the above, Notre Dame gave me one amazing gift. In my second semester, I took Professor Louis MacKenzie's freshman seminar, On Interpretation, a class that forever changed the way I write and edit in addition to how I consume film, poetry, and music. Professor MacKenzie and I remain in contact, and I'm entirely grateful for his mentorship.

She’s accompanied by her best friend/roommate (and probable nymphomaniac) Hylan, who has plans of her own for revenge against an old high school bully.
